This is one of my favorite techniques. It’s absolutely indispensable, so really practice this one. You’ll also want to remember this one because it’s going to help you learn a really cool riff that Simon Shaheen plays in his album Blue Flame. And you’re going to learn Simon Shaheen’s riff in next week’s video!

Learn how to play the 3 stroke accent in the video below.

The 3 Stroke Accent

Difficulty: easy to moderate

What?

A three stroke accent is a very fast tremolo of only 3 strokes. The Stroke pattern is down up down. These 3 strokes are played very fast as though they are one stroke. It is usually played at the beginning of passages to make them more interesting and more intense. I can’t emphasize enough how useful this technique is. Practicing it will help your tremolo become more controlled as well.

What’s Next?

In next week’s video, you’ll learn a really cool way to apply this technique. You’ll learn a riff from Simon Shaheen’s piece called Blue Flame.

2 Thoughts to “3 Stroke Accent (Short Tremolo Burst)”

Once again, great stuff. I’d call this a “fast triplet”. Think of the first notes of the 1812 Overature (aka theme to the Lone Ranger).

Yes, I was thinking about that piece of music too.
