private oud lessons

I was Live on YouTube again for over an hour discussing the benefits of taking private Oud lessons, and I wanted to give you the rundown on the session: (scroll down for the video)

Discounts on Oud Lessons in August

I’m giving discounts on Oud lessons in August, the deadline is Friday August 7 11:59 PM Pacific time. Book here. Get 20% off the price listed.

The Benefits of Private Oud Lessons

  1. Accountability…
  2. Get encouragement on your progress…
  3. Get feedback on weaknesses you aren’t even aware of…
  4. Focus on practicing and playing, rather than on figuring out what to learn…
  5. Ask questions in real-time…
  6. Make a connection to a real life Oudist and draw on their experience…
  7. Learn what you want…

Accountability.

An external motivator is a great way to force you to practice. Meeting someone every week or twice a month goes a long way to ensure you stay on track.

Get encouragement on your progress…

I often see little bits of progress from month to month in my students. It’s important to hear what you’re doing right as a student to keep your motivation up and boost your confidence.

In private Oud lessons, your teacher can see your weak spots you’re not yet aware of.

As a student you’re focused on a particular task and you won’t have the conscious awareness of the multiple things you are doing at the same time. A teacher can see the overview of your playing and give you priceless feedback. You’ll become aware of what you missed or didn’t perform correctly, be it intonation, or rhythm. These reminders help you cultivate the awareness until your muscle memory kicks in.

Focus on practicing and playing, rather than figuring out what’s next…

With a teacher, you can let the teacher guide you so that you can focus on practicing and honing your skills. You don’t need to go find the next tune to play or figure out what exercise will help you… you just let your teacher handle that.

Ask questions in real-time during private Oud lessons…

The downside of prerecorded online tutorials is that there’s a delay before you can get your question answered. With private lessons, you can ask right away, so you can progress faster. Of course, there’s always going to times when a teacher needs to think about a question before giving a fulsome answer, but that also makes learning fun because there’s some mystery involved.

Make a connection with another real human Oudist…

There’s nothing worse than being alone… and Oud players are few and far between. Having a teacher can bridge that gap, especially one that you resonate with and enjoy spending time with, or one that you feel is helping you get where you want to go.

Learn what you want.

Whether it’s composition, taqasim, Persian or Arabic music, a specific song, or some exercises, it’s important to have an interest in what you’re learning. You learn better when you’re interested in what you’re learning. When you can directly see how something is in line with your goals, it’s easier to practice, and it’s easier to find the time.

What you can learn with Navid

I always assess your ability first. So we can have a 15-20 free consultation to see where you’re at and where you want to go. Contact me at support@oudforguitarists.com to set one up.

I use my own teaching materials and methods as well as some pieces from different Oud books.

Persian or Arabic style…

The basics of these two styles is more or less the same. But the approach, repertoire, and vibe of the music is different.

After learning the basics with my own beginner material, you’ll study pieces from Jamil Bashir’s Oud method, the Tunisian Institute of Music, and if you have any music you want to play, let me know and we can do those too. After you advance to an upper-intermediate level, we’ll start to develop your art of taqasim.

For Persian style, we go from the basics to learning Persian folk tunes written specifically for Oud. Then to some traditional pieces from Tar and Setar method books adapted for Oud as well as some of my own compositions. Later when you’re more advanced you will study the Radif of Persian music so that you can really start to get to the heart of Persian classical music.

What some of my students are learning in our private Oud lessons…

Among of various things some of my students learn from me is the art of taqasim, composition, and Persian Radif (a huge passion of mine).

One of my students is even studying at a couple pieces of Johann Sebastian Bach adapted for Oud.
