This week you’ll have a chance to listen to some new Persian music arranged for Oud and Setar. Diba Ensemble and I will be having a concert May 29, 2015, and we had the opportunity to go on a late night live radio show to talk about and play music.
It’s the first Persian concert I’ve done is several years. I’ve been out of the Persian music scene for a while, and I’m really happy to be a part of this really tight group of young talented musicians. They are highly organized and resourceful.
Here are some of the reasons I am excited about playing this concert.
Setar and Oud go so well together.
These two instruments are a great match. Setar is a higher frequency instruments, and Oud rounds out the bass and middle range making a full unison of sound.
The music is completely original work.
I’ve done many Persian concerts, and 100% of time, we end up playing covers. I’m not into this anymore. I want to play original music, and be a part of the creative process that goes into making music. That’s one of the main reasons I agreed to do this concert. All the music has been composed by Hossein Meimani and Peyman Rouhandeh who both play Setar in this ensemble.
The musicians are young, yet creative and mature.
The core ensemble have been working together for a couple years now, and are quite comfortable with each other. There is a good level of respect and maturity between them which I like to see.
You’ll experience the warmth and hospitality of Persian culture and the energy and dynamics of progressive traditional Persian music.
So if you’re in Vancouver May 29th, come join us at UBC’s Roy Barnett Recital Hall at 7 PM.
You can buy tickets here.
If not, you can stream the radio show here. Fast forward to 53:40 for the music.
