As I mentioned last week…
in my newsletter…
(You’re on my newsletter right? If not, get on.)
There will be a new tutorial on Umm Kulthum’s song Alf Leila was Leila (composed by Baligh Hamdi). It’s here!
I have always stayed away from doing Umm Kulthum tunes because I don’t really enjoy the recording quality. It makes it really hard to hear what the instruments are playing, so it’s hard to come up with a good transcription or interpretation. Luckily there are a lot of transcriptions already available if you look hard enough.
Even then, sometimes I rewrite parts the way I hear them.
And sometimes you have to write them the way an Oud ought to play them.
What I wanted to focus on in this video was learning how to play the bare basics of the intro, and then demonstrating what some Oud ornaments and embellishments sound like when you apply them to this piece.
Umm Kulthum tunes are looooong…. so I’ve decided to do a short part of the intro. It’s an awesome composition and I hope you’ll learn it.
Want to learn these ornaments and embellishments and apply them to this song and more?
