We’re going to study a maqam that you’ve likely never heard before. It’s very unique, and was actually invented not more than 25 years ago by one of the most famous Persian Tar players in the world, Hossein Alizadeh.
Maqam Daado Bidaad
This maqam was first released in the album “Raze No”, in 1999. “Raze no”, means “Novel Mystery”. Novel meaning, “new” in this context.
It was then featured on the album, “Zemestan Ast”, “It’s winter”, in 2000, with Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Homayoun Shajarian, and Kayhan Kalhor.
Alizadeh invented this maqam by combining the melodic features of two sub-modes from two distinct Dastgah. Dastgah is a term that has a broader term that contains the meaning of maqam. But Persians do not consider Dastgah and Maqam the same. Dastgah has additional features which Maqams do not have. We can discuss this in the workshop as it is fairly complicated.
He discovered a bridge between two Dastgah which actually works very well, and actually creates a new sound.
I think it’s a fairly significant discovery. Like discovering a new element on the periodic table. Or discovering a new colour on the spectrum.
He called it Maqam Daad o Bidaad. He used the term maqam to differential it from a Dastgah in the strict sense, and because it doesn’t behave exactly like a Dastgah does. Daad is one submode that is found in Dastgah of Mahour, and Bidaad is a submode of Dastgah of Homayoun. We’re going to discover how these two submodes were joined to create this maqam.
