Ornamentation in oud music is what we’re going to focus on this July.
This is crucial in your Oud learning development.
Even if you are a beginner, it’s okay to get exposed to ornaments and techniques.
To help with this, I have made a playlist of all my Oud techniques and ornamentation videos on my YouTube channel.
Check out the list…

Doraab – Persian term for a short tremolo of 3 strokes down-up-down that serves as an accent on a note beginning a melodic phrase. I call it tremolo burst, 3 stroke accent. I’m still looking for an equivalent western term for this.

Ornamentation in different Oud cultures
When you study Persian, Arabic, and Turkish music cultures, you start to see a different approach to ornamentation, and particularly notation of ornamentation.
In an upcoming video, I’m going to discuss the differences I’ve noticed over the years to give you a good overview of what ornamentation looks like in these cultures.
This will expose you to a different perspective.
One comparison I will discuss is how ornamentation is notated in these cultures. The standard practice in Arabic and Ottoman traditions is to write scores with the basic melody. Whereas, in the Persian traditional, ornamentation is also included in all scores in copious detail in some cases.
What are the benefits and drawbacks to both approaches? Make sure to sign up for my newsletter at the link above or subscribe to my YouTube channel.
