This is one of the most easy ways to take a simple melody and make it more interesting. I call it the doubling up technique.

Learn how to do it below:

The Doubling Up Technique

Difficulty: Easy

What?

The doubling up technique is taking a melody and adding more notes. On musical notation it looks like this:

You’re basically adding another note for every 8th note you see turning them into 16th notes.

Why?

Advanced Oud players often do this to make simple phrases sound different or exciting. It is deceptively easy to accomplish.

How?

Always use the stroke pattern of down up down up for all doubling up. When played fast it might sound like a tremolo.

What’s Next?

This technique is most useful when you have a melody that repeats or is played twice. You can play it normally the first time and then spice it up with doubling up the notes.
